Work Experience Program term 2 & 3 2020

The Work Experience program has changed at Kingsgrove High School as of last year. Students now have the opportunity to elect to take part in Work Experience for one week in terms 2 or 3, after negotiation with the host employer and the school. Work Experience is an invaluable opportunity for students to learn on the job skills for a profession they may be interested in the future. We highly recommend that Year 10 and Year 11 students take this opportunity.

Work experience Year 10 students may not always know where they want to train or which career direction to take. A good starting point is to choose the work environment such as an office, shop, factory or marine environment. In which case, gaining experience in an adult work environment is important. It is possible to discover your career path during the work exposure.

What is work experience?

Work experience is an arrangement which allows a student to perform tasks and duties similar to the functions of a regular worker. The goals of work experience placement are to:

· provide learning experience in a real-work environment

· teach and develop specific skills relating to a job

· develop self -confidence and communication skills

· teach students how to work with other people

Benefits of work experience

The placement of work experience year 10 students often provides young Australians with much needed direction as they are able to see which skills potential employers are looking for in an employee. This increases your chances of obtaining employment after school.

Other benefits of a work experience placement include:

· skills development

· clarity in career direction or path

· on-the-job training experience

· improvement of CV or resume

· development of interpersonal skills

Employers benefit as well by gaining access to valuable skills and better choices for recruitment. It is well known that many employers eventually hire work experience Year 10 students on a permanent basis when satisfied with their placements.

A placement may be full-time or extended. Full-time arrangements allow a student to work in a business for a week or longer period, and apply usual hours of work. Extended placements take a longer period to complete in which a student is required to show up and work only once every week.

Organising work experience- steps to follow

1. Ms Theodoris will be able guide students and help facilitate placements for students.

2. Placements are often limited to a few vacancies so it’s best to make enquiries and send applications early.

3. Give the necessary paper work to the Host Employer and the yellow Work Experience form to Ms Theodoris, 3 weeks prior to the start date.

4. It is the student's responsibility to check with teachers regarding possible assessment tasks or tests during the week of work placement.

If you have any questions about work experience, please see Ms Theodoris the Careers Adviser in the library.

Novel Coronavirus Update

We at KHS are actively working to ensure our students and staff are learning in a safe environment.

The Principal is currently working with the Department of Education to monitor and respond to the unfolding international novel coronavirus situation. The school is actively working to limit any exposure of the virus to our school. Ms Sofo has been in communication with students known to have travelled to China during this time and is following the Department of Education recommendations. In the interest of prioritising the health and welfare of our students and our community, the following protocols will be in place to start the new year.

Current advice from the Australian Government Department of Health for parents and affected staff is:

•             People who have been in contact with any confirmed Novel Coronavirus cases must be isolated in their home for 14 days following exposure;

• Returned travellers who have been in Hubei Province of China must be isolated in their home for 14 days after leaving Hubei Province, other than for seeking individual medical care.

Students and staff currently excluded from school are those who:

• over the last 14 days has visited the province of Hubei in central China. They should not return to school or child care services for a period of 14 days after leaving China, as the coronavirus’ incubation period can be as long as two weeks or

• are under medical assessment or

• have been diagnosed with the Novel Coronavirus or

• have had close contact with a confirmed case of the Novel Coronavirus. The Ministry of Health has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia.

In addition The NSW Ministry of Health and NSW Department of Education have recommended that:

• Any student or staff member who was in China, including Hong Kong but excluding the province of Hubei over the past 14 days is recommended not attend school or child care services for a period of 14 days after leaving Hubei Province, as the Novel Coronavirus’ incubation period can be as long as two weeks.

Students who returned to Australia more than 14 days ago and have shown no symptoms are able to return to school this week.

There has been a small number of cases of confirmed Novel Coronavirus in New South Wales.

The Ministry of Health has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia. Advice about not attending school would be provided to these close contacts by the Ministry of Health.

Consistent with current guidelines, staff and students who are unwell with respiratory illness should remain at home until symptoms resolve. In accordance with our current practice if any child becomes unwell we will implement our infection control guidelines and follow the advice provided by the Ministry of Health as appropriate.

The Principal will continue to monitor the situation closely and take advice received from NSW Ministry of Health and NSW Department of Education to ensure KHS is responding to the situation appropriately.

The Infection Control guidelines are available on the website at https://education.nsw.gov.au/.../risk-manag.../infection-control

Students in Year 9 Visual Arts, have had a very productive year learning and making art. In term 2 students explored 3D sculpture, making clay masks inspired by culture. Students learned how to mould a mask, create facial features and apply textures and patterns and glaze their artwork.

The results were innovative and students were excited by their outcomes.

True Women Developing Future Leaders Conference

On Friday 29th November Ms Hillier, the Girls' Advisor, a group of girls, including myself, attended the George's River Council True Women Developing Future Leaders Program. We participated in a handful of different workshops centering on resilience, gratitude and goal setting throughout the day, as well as listened to inspirational presentations spoken by empowering women. Kingsgrove High joined forces with six other schools in the effort of building leadership skills for the future generation of female leaders. I would like to extend my thanks to all the Councillors and volunteers who gave up their time and efforts in providing an exceptional experience for young women of the future generation.

Under 14A Boys Touch Premiers

We arrived at Clemton Park to see the 14B final was still being played: Blakehurst vs Belmore. Our B team had lost to Blakehurst in the semi-final the previous week. The Kingsgrove boys started to get mentally ready for the game and passed the footy around to settle some nerves.

Blakehurst won the B Grand Final and the Kingsgrove As were straight on the field to check out the size. It was a wider field than we had been playing on during the round games. Jone V, our team captain, was giving instructions about the game plan and who would be our starting line-up. The accredited referee then came over to give some instructions and the game began.

The first few minutes were tense as everyone waited to see who would get the upper hand with the first try (actually called “touchdown” in touch, but the boys like to call them ‘tries’ still).

It wasn’t long before Mohammed S ran through a hole in the Belmore defence and scored. Kingsgrove 1, Belmore 0.

Less than 2 minutes later, Tim N sprinted down the field to score our second try. Josh S ran more than half the length of the field to score our third in the 5th minute. What a start! The tries kept coming with Mohammed scoring his second, Ben S moving swiftly to avoid 2 defenders scoring in the 10th minute, Adrian D scoring in the corner and Jone piercing the defence to score from short range to wrap up the first half. Belmore scored 3 times during the first half, including their try of the day: an amazing effort by their number 5 who beat 4 of our defenders before passing to his teammate for a full-length of the field play to score.

Half-time. Kingsgrove 7 – Belmore 3.

We were feeling good about the first half, but knew that we needed to keep playing well, concentrate, work hard in defence and not take our opposition for granted in the second half. The boys did a great job. Setefano S scored a double in the second half with a superb ball from Ben after he drew the winger in, Jone scored his second try with some impressive footwork to step the defenders in the 28th minute, and Josh scored twice more, making him our top scorer with a hat-trick for the game.

The final score was Kingsgrove 12, Belmore 5. Well done to the Kingsgrove 14As! Excellent team work, great sportsmanship and amazing skills. Congratulations!

Mrs Harlow (Coach)
Say No to Domestic Violence Walk

On Friday 22nd November, students from Kingsgrove High School represented the school proudly at the annual "Say No to Domestic Violence" walk that was held at Kogarah's Jubilee Oval. The event, organised by Georges River Council intended to promote change, encouraging men, women and youth to stand up against domestic violence in the community. Students listened to an address, given by a Police Officer, detailing the devastating prevalance of Domestic and Family Violence in Australia.

The statistics are shocking and all students rallied together to advocate for change and encourage support for victims by finishing their excursion with a community walk to Kogarah Town Square. All representatives from the Prefect Body and 10E1 are to be congratulated on their exemplary representation of our school.

Year 10 students had the opportunity to take part in a two day training in a ‘Food Hygiene and a Barista’ course at school and at Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL.

This was an invaluable experience, students gained theorical and practical skills which will help them obtain part-time or full time work in the Hospitality industry in the future.

The students were buzzing with excitement. Plenty of coffees were sampled along the way, by the end of the practical training they learned how to make espressos, lattes, cappuccinos and many more coffees.

For those interested in taking part in the training next year, please look out for updates from Ms Theodoris- The Careers Advisor

On Monday 11th November, Kingsgrove High School stopped to commemorate Remembrance Day in honour of Australians who have served in conflicts protecting our country.

The ceremony was ably delivered by our School Captains, Thomas and Anna. Our gratitude to Thomas who was instrumental in organising the ceremony and writing the speech. Prefects distributed red poppies and one minute silence was observed as we paid our respects. With thanks also to Zoe B and Jason who were our flag bearers. Jason was also representing the Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC). Our appreciation is also extended to Zayyan of Year 7, representing the Riverwood Hornets Squadron, who led a rousing Last Post on the bugle.

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates.
Prefect Induction 2020

Prefect Investiture

The 2020 Prefects cohort were formally inducted into their roles at the Prefect Investiture ceremony on Tuesday 29th October 2019

As the Prefect co-ordinator, I was very proud to see them receive their Blazers, ties, badges and certificates, and then give their pledges, in which they promised to uphold their responsibilities as Prefects. Particular recognition should be extended to our School Captains, Thomas and Anna for leading the oath of office and their inspiring advice to their fellow Prefects.

I feel confident that all of these fine young men and women are more than capable of rising to the challenges that leadership necessarily brings.

The experience of being a Prefect will be transformative for them. Through service, each Prefect will come to understand his or her strengths. All will grow in confidence and, I am certain, all will give back to the Kingsgrove High School community.

The ceremony provided a welcome opportunity to meet the parents of our fine young leaders as well as giving parents a chance to applaud the achievements of their children in attaining the position of Prefect. The Prefects should feel confident that they are not alone. They will be assisted along the way by staff.

In particular I would like to thank Mr Evans, Ms Deep and Mr Flaviano for their contribution to the investiture ceremony, as well as to all other staff who were instrumental in making sure that the Prefects would be recognised appropriately on the night.

Mrs Angela Ferguson

Year 11 Multimedia Students @ JMC Academy

What a day! Year 11 Multimedia Students attended a full day of workshops at JMC Academy. Students were able to alternate between using industry standard TV cameras in the studio, volunteer to be the talent in front of the cameras or work in the production studio controlling and switching vision as filming progressed. Gus, Tim, Jake and Nathan from JMC were fantastic mentors as they assisted students using the equipment and provided support and suggestions.

Students were then invited to enjoy a pizza lunch on the rooftop provided by JMC before returning to the studio for an afternoon of scene development. Some students embraced their character's storyline with gusto - Fatima and Tas delivered award winning scenes and became more liberal with the character development as filming progressed. JMC will provide all footage for students to review and critique in the coming weeks - will definitely need a movie day to view it all.

We are grateful to Nicholas McVay, Class of 2017. Part of his prize for winning the Martini Award at JMC Academy last year with his superb Space Escape stop motion was the free workshop which allowed us to benefit this year. The day was an invaluable experience for all students as they start to develop ideas for their Year 12 Major Projects.

Fun Fact: Allan T, the concierge at JMC Academy was an ex student of Kingsgrove High School from 1973!

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Beanies for Brain Cancer

Our Beanies for Brain Cancer fundraiser was organised by the very proactive Thomas N and Ismail H and a hardworking and willing team of Year 11 students who worked tirelessly in the lead up to the event and doubled down on our fundrasing day. Heartfelt thanks to the teachers, students and parents who donated cakes, cookies and other baked goods to sell. The donation of time and effort was greatly appreciated.

The day was a huge success and the multitude of baked goods - basically sugar in multiple disguises - were all snapped up before the end of recess. Our BBQ and drinks special for lunch - light on healthy food choices but big on fundraising efforts was also very popular. Due to the dedicated team of Year 11 students spearheaded by Thomas and Ismail, we will be donating an impressive $2358 to the Mark Hughes Foundation for Brain Cancer, dedicated in memory of our very own Hadi Hammoud, who lost his battle with brain cancer in September, 2017. Always in our hearts Hadi. We are so proud and impressed with the way our students just stepped in and worked together for a greater cause.

Macbeth Excursion

On Thursday 15 August, students from Year 10 English had the pleasure of attending a performance of the great Scottish play, Macbeth. Written by Shakespeare, the play grapples with key moral dilemmas and follows the demise of a man due to the corrupting power of unchecked ambition. Below, you will find a review written by Year 10 students.

Arriving at the play, I realised the atmosphere was inviting and left me intrigued to see the play. Small details such as the set up of the stage even before the play began was interesting, creative and left the audience with curiosity. After watching the play, I came to the realisation that the tragic nature of the play was foreshadowed right from the beginning by the crow silhouette placed on the curtains of the stage. I was also drawn into the play by the great acting – the characters had depth and it was as though they were not even acting at all. Rather than just reading from a script the actors gave their characters a place in the story and allowed the audience to connect with them. The play also added more light hearted moments; allowing the audience to have a laugh, such as when Duncan interacted directly with the audience and told a joke that made everyone laugh. My favourite part of the play was when Macbeth was debating with his emotions whether to kill Duncan or not because it depicts the reality of emotions and consciousness. All in all, this play was very enjoyable by my class and myself. The play was captivating and allowed the audience, including myself, the opportunity to feel the emotions being played out by the cast as well as having a good laugh. It was one of my favourite plays, for the reasons listed above, and I would watch it again!

Student review of the play ‘Macbeth’ held at the Seymour Centre.
Welcome back to Term 3

Welcome back to all students and parents. I hope students have all had a happy, safe and restful holiday and are ready to tackle all that Term 3 will bring.

Term 3 is a very busy term, especially for our Year 12 students. This is the last Term for our Year 12 cohort. The Trial HSC begins in Week 2, 29 July. Students should have been studying hard over the holiday break in preparation for the Trial HSC exams and upcoming assessments as well as the actual Higher School Certificate in Term 4. We wish Year 12 well in their trials. A reminder to all students to grant Year 12 the courtesy of quiet around the Hall during the Trial exam period.

The Principal, Mr Douglas Melville, is taking extended leave for all Term 3. I will be Relieving Principal. Ms Maria Dracopoulos will be Relieving Deputy Principal, looking after Years 7, 9 and 11. Ms Angela Ferla will be Relieving HT Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA).

Parent Teacher evening

Parent –Teacher evening will be held on Tuesday August 6, 3.30 – 6.30pm for Years 8, 9 and 10. Reports will be released through the Sentral Parent Portal prior to Parent Teacher interviews.

While the Parent-Teacher evening is an opportunity to discuss the report, it is also an opportunity to discuss other educational and developmental issues regarding your child with their teachers.

Parents are reminded to use the online facility to book interview times.

We look forward to seeing all parents on the evening.

Winter Uniform

With the colder weather upon us, I’d like to remind parents of the importance of sending their child to school in appropriate winter uniform. We encourage school uniform to promote a sense of belonging. Seeing the school in uniform is a positive experience for visitors and helps build pride.

It is important that students dress warmly for school to ensure that they do not get sick. The winter school uniform is long blue pants or blue skirt, blue shirt and school blue jumper or jacket and black leather shoes. I would like to remind all parents that ‘hoodies’ are not an agreed uniform item and are not to be worn by students to school.

Just a reminder, with the warnings in the media regarding the Flu season, it is always wise to keep ill children home. Infections can spread rapidly in the hothouse environment of a school. Often the two or three days away mean both a speedy recovery and less likelihood of an infection spreading.

O Sofo

Relieving Principal

Kingsgrove Business Challenge a roaring success

This year's Kingsgrove Business Challenge showed that bigger can be better.

During the end of Term 3, 80 students from Years 9 to 11 signed up to engage in collaborative learning activities whilst creating a simulated business, promoting a product range and clamouring to win the KBC Trophy.

Students quickly warmed to the fast paced learning environment by developing teamwork skills, learning how visual merchandising assists a business and promoting their product to parents and friends at our Presentation Evening on the Thursday night where over 60 community members attended, as well as students.

As in any competitive endeavour, there can only be one winner and whilst the student feedback was overwhelmingly positive with students having learnt new skills and made new friends, the KBC trophy was won by 'Choco Block', a business selling chocolate products to a mass market, ably led by Anna Y.

Congratulations to all the participants on a wonderful effort and many thanks to judges, support staff and coordinators.

Mr Jacob Appleby, Head Teacher Social Science

Kingsgrove High School sent the Girls Open, 17’s Boys and 16’s Girls Volleyball teams to the one day Schools Cup Tournament at Homebush.

Over 55 teams from across NSW attended and all students had a great time competing against other schools. Both of our girls teams have played a number of seasons together in grade competition and it was fantastic to see them perform so well. Our Opens wound up finishing first in second division.

Our Boys team was a mix of ages from Years 7 to 10 and what they lacked in experience as a team they made up for in enthusiasm.

A great day had by all!

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition.
Year 7, Year 11 and Year 12 Parent/Teacher Evening 2019

I look forward to meeting as many parents and carers as is possible on the evening of Tuesday 25 June, when we hold our annual Year 7, Year 11 and Year 12 three way Parent(carer) – Teacher – Student evening.

These important meetings give an opportunity for the parents of Year 7 to meet their child’s teacher and get more insight into how they have settled into high school. Along with all Year 7 teachers, Ms Ford and Ms Bell, the two Year advisers, will be in attendance, as well as Mrs Sofo the Year 7 Deputy Principal.

For students in the senior school, it gives parents an insight to how their Year 11 son or daughter is progressing with the educational demands of the senior school, and the Preliminary Course expectations.

The Year 11 Course is made up of three terms, and we are now well over half way through the course. Along with all Year 11 teachers, Ms Deep and Mr Flaviano, the two Year Advisers, will be in attendance, as well as Ms Sofo, the Year 11 Deputy Principal.

For Year 12, we are approaching the last term of the HSC Course. It is a time for families to get advice about how to be best prepared for the last 10 weeks of Term 3, including preparation for the Trial HSC examinations. Along with all Year 12 teachers, Ms Ferguson and Mr Nicolls will be in attendance, along with Mr Evans, the Year 12 Deputy Principal.

Jai and Xin from Year 10 recently had a unique opportunity to participate in the school work experience at Taronga Zoo during week 6 this term.

The students had the chance to work alongside a zoo keeper and gain experience in the role for a week. During their time , at the zoo, the students were exposed to a wide variety of duties from the very interesting to the routine, these included: cleaning the animal enclosures, preparing and distributing food for the animals, observing and recording animal behaviours, assisting the keeper with talks to the general public, interacting and holding weird and wonderful creatures. The students had many stories to tell of holding snakes, lizards and other animals you never usually get to see up close.

If you are interested in participating work experience at Taronga Zoo , applications for next year open in term 4. Please see Ms Theodoris Careers Adviser for further information.

We were given an opportunity, along with students from schools all over NSW, to meet with state Politicians and to ask questions in an open Forum. We were given guided tours of both State Parliament and Government House and, as a highlight, had the opportunity to meet the Governor of NSW, Margaret Beazley.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Our students were lucky enough to be invited to the morning tea event organised by the Aboriginal Education and Wellbeing team in partnership with the Brighton Le Sands Novotel on Thursday 30 May.

As a mark of reconciliation, local school students and partners from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds came together and were encouraged to pursue their goals and dreams through education by guest speaker and former NRL player, George Rose.

Our students celebrated with other schools in the community and were treated to special performances, NRL guest speakers and a delightful morning tea.

Safety around Kingsgrove Road

Kingsgrove Road is a busy thoroughfare, with four lanes of very busy traffic.

We provide some supervision each afternoon, but I ask you to impress on your child the need to cross Kingsgrove Road appropriately, at pedestrian controlled crossings at either the Stoney Creek Road or the Primary School Crossings.

Similarly, mornings are very busy around the Infants’ School campus, and the Primary School campus, at the front of the high school. Sadly, I note many parents from both schools do not abide by common sense and safe road usage. I yet again implore parents to take extreme care when dropping their children off at the high school.

Parents, and the community, need to be extra vigilant as young people can be unpredictable, and I request that you abide by all road rules when in the school vicinity, with particular reference to parking and dropping students at the school.

We strongly encourage students to use the pedestrian gates at the front of the school, to access the school. No student has permission to use the school’s carpark driveway gates, this is an essential safety management strategy.

We have painted markings around the car park area that these areas are out-of-bounds to students, and information has been given to students at whole school and year assemblies. The school will apply consequence to those students who do not conduct themselves in a safe manner.

There is also no parking on the school’s premises for parents and visitors, and due to limited parking, many staff need to park in adjacent streets. If you need to drop your child due to injury, illness, or lack of wellbeing, please inform the school. We are happy to support families, and ask that you drive into the carpark and down to the disability drop off area.

Message from the Principal.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

Uniform Reminder – Wear it Proud!

Uniform Reminder – Wear it Proud!

With the weather becoming colder, students may let their uniform standards slip, particularly with wet weather. I urge parents to check what their child is wearing to school each morning.

Our catch phrase with regard to uniform continues to be “Wear it Proud”, and students are constantly reminded to wear their correct uniform, at all times, and with pride.

We expect all students to wear:

Correct black leather shoes, which fully enclose their feet.

For consistency, we expect all students to wear leather shoes. They safely protect your child’s feet in specialist learning environments (such as technology kitchens and workshops, and science laboratories) and in movement to and from school, and in movement around the school (in cases of maintenance work, sharps in the community, etc.). Leather shoes also provide greater warmth and protection in cold and wet weather.

Plain black leather sports shoes are very acceptable, and can be worn as a school shoe, and a sport shoe on Wednesdays, however, they must be without colour, designs or designer marks. Canvass and material sport shoes are never acceptable as a school shoe, and I encourage parents to check with the school before buying expensive sport brand shoes, on the advice of their children (who may inform parents that it is acceptable!).

Full school uniform, including warm and appropriate school jumpers.

We recommend that students do not wear ‘hooded’ style jumpers. If outsiders come on to the school’s premises, they are easily identifiable by not being in uniform. Hooded garments may be used by outsiders to hide their identity, or obscure visual recognition. Consistent uniform enables us to maintain a safe learning environment for every child.

The school's sport uniform is to be worn only on a Wednesday (Sport Day).

On days other than sport, students should change out of their Sport / PE uniform when PE classes have finished. The sport shorts and/or school tracksuit pants, and red sport shirt are not to be worn on other days. Non-sport tracksuit pants are not part of Kingsgrove HS school uniform, and should not be worn at any time. Students in Years 8 - 10 should not 'mix and match' their sport uniform and non-sport uniforms.

School uniform also safely identifies our students in the community.

All students have been made aware of the process to follow in the event their uniform is not ready for school.

In summary, WEAR IT PROUD:

It is expected that all students at Kingsgrove High School will wear full school uniform when travelling to and from school.

The Parents and Citizens' Association (P&C) strongly endorse our school uniform policy.

If out of uniform, students will need to present a parent/guardian note to the Deputy Principal before school where a uniform pass will be issued for the day. This note is to identify the student, their roll call class, the item of clothing and the duration of the pass.

Uniform passes will be checked at different times of the day by the DPs and Head Teachers and throughout the day by teachers.

Consequences may be applied to students who persistently do not comply with these requests.

Message from the Principal

Work Experience at Kingsgrove High School

The work experience program has changed at Kingsgrove High School this year.

Students will now have the opportunity to elect to take part in work experience for one week in terms 2 and 3, after negotiation with the host employer and the school.

In week 4 this term, we had three Year 10 students who took part in work experience in variety of fields. Giorgios had the opportunity to work at Double J Auto Smash repairs in Condell Park. Giorgios is interested in undertaking an apprenticeship in auto repairs, having the opportunity to participate in work experience allowed him to gain hands on experience in this field.

Nikita, this week had the opportunity to work at Waratah Private Hospital in Hurtsville. Nikita is interested in studying nursing and this opportunity allowed her to have firsthand experience in what it is like work in a hospital, how to do rounds and check on patients.

Finally, Mariam had the opportunity to work at Foot Locker in Hurstville Westfield. Mariam is interested in working in the retail industry. Mariam had the chance to learn retail skills, how to assist customers and learning valuable skills necessary in this line of work.

Work experience is an invaluable opportunity for students to learn on the job skills for a profession they may be interested in the future. We highly recommend that Year 10 and Year 11 students take this opportunity .

If you have any questions about work experience, please see Ms Theodoris the Careers Adviser in the library.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

The NSW Department of Education is supporting the ‘Adopt A Farmer’ initiative beginning this week across the nation.

As you are no doubt aware, farming communities are doing it tough with crippling drought in NSW and Victoria and both drought and flooding rains in Queensland. We have all been touched by the tough conditions farmers, their families, their animals and communities are experiencing.

Many of our learning communities have been enthusiastic supporters of drought relief drives to date. Students, particularly those in city schools have been asked to lend a hand.

To support this great initiative, the SRC and Prefects combined on Friday 3rd May to hold a BBQ to fundraise for the farmers.

It gives us great pleasure to announce that as a result of the student’s efforts, we raised $400 to support the farmers and their communities.

A donation to “Rural Aid”, a registered charity has now been made in the name of Kingsgrove High School.

Thank you to all the students and staff for supporting this great initiative.

Year 9 History students represented Kingsgrove High School at the local Anzac Commemorative Day Service, held at Kingsgrove RSL.

The service was led by students from schools in the local community. Yoyo and Te Raha were speakers at the service, John and Dominic laid the wreath on behalf of the school. As part of the Stage 5 History course for the Australian Curriculum, students are currently studying Australia’s involvement in World War I.

The students appreciated the importance of the Anzac tradition and the opportunity to honour the memory of all Australians who have given their lives in times of war in the service of our nation.

We thank Kingsgrove RSL for their invitation to participate in the Anzac Commemorative Day service.

Year 11 Multimedia ABC Studios and Powerhouse Museum Tour

Year 11 Multimedia students visited ABC Studios and the Powerhouse Museum to view the Shape Exhibition.

Students were taken through the ABC studios by volunteers who shared their knowledge of the studio processes and resources. The tour encompassed radio studios, tv studios, make up and effects rooms as well as allowing students to experience the use of a teleprompter with a green screen.

Students also viewed exemplar major projects at the Powerhouse Museum in the Shape exhibition. Excitement intensified when students discovered the Wiggles Exhibition. Childhoods revisited.

Oops moment goes to Lilian when we visited a popular restaurant franchise on our way back to Central Station. One taste of an ice cream before it magically jumped out of Lilian's hand and landed on the ground.

Overall, a great day with a fantastic group of students.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

On Monday 8 April, the school held an assembly to commemorate ANZAC day which will fall during the school holidays.

Recognising ANZAC day is an important part of our country and Kingsgrove High School prides itself on being a part of this, and remembering those who demonstrated great courage in the service to their country and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The ceremony was led by school prefects, all students displayed high levels of respect, including our audience and our senior students on stage who delivered a polished, solemn and respectful tribute to our defence forces.

Kingsgrove High school students participated in a World’s Greatest shave fundraising event on Thursday 28 March.

Five students were ‘brave enough to shave’ whilst 40 students chose to have their hair coloured for a worthy cause, donating to the Leukaemia foundation to help find a cure for blood cancer. Other students simply donated to the cause. It was wonderful to see such a willingness to participate and help from the school community, both students and staff.

The event was also greatly assisted by community support, particularly from Eddie’s Salon at Roselands. Eddie Alawieh donated his time and skill, visiting the school to ensure that the volunteers received the best of service.

Thank you to staff and members of the wider community to also donated of their own accord. Their contribution ended up making up the bulk of the donations. The Prefects were our workers and collectors, they did a great job and made the event a lot of fun.

In total, the students raised $300 on the day and additional contributions meant that a total of $ 780 was raised.

On Tuesday 5 March the Student Representative Council (SRC) held a ‘Gelato Day’ fundraiser to raise money for the North Queensland Floods Appeal.

The ‘Gelato Day’ fundraiser was arranged and delivered by SRC students, with the assistance of SRC Coordinator Mr Fourfouris and several volunteer staff and students.

We are delighted to report Gelato Day was a huge success with all ice cream flavours sold out. The SRC did an amazing job serving every tub of ice cream available. They raised a tidy $360 which will be kindly donated to NQL flood victims.

The SRC promotes, encourages and facilitates student involvement within the school community in activities which may strengthen and enrich the school community. They regularly raise monies for the purpose of funding approved student activities within the SRC for the promotion of social justice or environmental issues or for the donation to charitable bodies. Kingsgrove High School is proud of the significant contribution the SRC makes to the school community.

Congratulations to Mr Fourfouris, the SRC and their supporters on the success of the fundraising event.

‘Encore’ is a program that showcases performances and compositions of an outstanding level by NSW students from the Higher School Certificate examinations, who achieved excellence in their HSC Music exams. It is held annually at the Sydney Opera House. The program consisted of singers, instrumentalists and composers with each performance amazingly diverse.

Within the program, solo and ensemble musical works that ranged from classical to jazz and contemporary music were featured. The wide variety of genres showcased granted enjoyment and amazement to all audience members, especially the Year 11 and 12 Music students. Overall, it is unquestionable that the Encore performances were incredible. Students were left mesmerised by the magnificence of each performance, being given an insight into the Music HSC expectations which they can use as inspiration for their own goals to reach in their future performance tasks and Music HSC examinations.

The Peer Support program is a skills based and experiential learning program which is designed to enhance peer connections throughout the school.

Year 11 and Year 7 students participate in our Peer Support Program in Term 1. This program encourages and supports Year 7 students in their new environment, welcoming them into the caring family atmosphere of which the school is proud.

Year 11 Peer Support leaders play a key role in supporting Year 7 students to fit into the Kingsgrove High School community. Our Peer Support leaders and their chosen 'buddy groups' participate in sessions, developing new skills and working well together, full of encouragement and motivation. The activities led by the leaders build positive relationships, encourage participation and assist younger students in taking personal responsibility and embracing lifelong learning. All activities are designed to encourage students to work collaboratively and support one another.

Peer support commenced in Week 2 this term. Year 7 students have started to build friendships both with each other and with their Peer Support leaders. So far the program has given Year 7 students an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the school and adjust to high school life. Year 11 Peer Support leaders have also had an opportunity to develop and demonstrate their leadership skills through their mentoring of younger students.

ARTEXPRESS 2019

On Tuesday 19 February, Year 12 Visual Arts students attended an excursion to the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) to view the ARTEXPRESS 2019 exhibition.

ARTEXPRESS is a dynamic and popular exhibition that features a selection of the most outstanding student artworks developed for the art making component of the HSC examination in Visual Arts.

The exhibition provides insight into students’ creativity and the issues important to them. It also encompasses a broad range of approaches and expressive forms, including ceramics, collection of works, documented forms, drawing, graphic design, painting, photo media, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and fibre, and time-based forms.

This visit enabled our students to see first-hand the standard of excellence in material practice and conceptual strength, which is required to achieve a Band 6 result in the HSC. Students spent the morning examining the artworks and collecting information and inspiration for their own HSC Body of Work. The calibre of the work this year at the AGNSW was exceptionally high, and students took numerous photos of works which piqued their interest. The students found inspiration in the many expressive forms and excitedly discussed the potential for their own artmaking.

You can read more about ARTEXPRESS on the official website.

The School Community Charter outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW public schools to ensure our learning environments are collaborative, supportive and cohesive.

The NSW Department of Education has introduced a School Community Charter (PDF 1.4 MB) for all members of NSW Public School communities. It has been developed in consultation with a wide range of stakeholders.

What our schools provide

NSW Public Schools work to create positive environments for students, staff and the entire school community that support student learning. We strive to ensure that every student is known, valued and cared for.

The best education happens when students, parents and schools work together.
Duke of Edinburgh international award

Kingsgrove High School has had 13 students committing to The Duke of Edinburgh International Award in 2019.

Each student has set themselves goals to achieve in developing a Skill, improving in Physical Recreation and committing to a community Service over 13 hours throughout the year. The Award culminates in students completing two Adventurous Journeys.

Each student has undertaken training on the skills required to complete their journeys. Due to injury we were reduced to 12 students attending the Practice Journey where they received support from staff on navigation, orienteering, camp craft, first aid and setting up and striking camp. The Practice Journey was along the Coastal Track in The Royal National Park from Bundeena to North Era Campground and back. Whilst this was a physically and mentally challenging event all students successfully completed the hike.

Our Qualifying Journey was in Heathcote National Park where 10 students had to manage their group without teacher support or direction hiking from Heathcote Train Station to Uloola Falls Campground and up to Audley Weir and back. On the second day we hiked to Waterfall Public School and past Camp Coutts. Whilst the weather was warm on the Thursday and roasting at over 34 degrees in the shade on the Friday, all participants completed the journey after having woken at 5:30am to beat the heat.

Congratulations to all the students who completed their Qualifying Journey and look forward to seeing them receive their Bronze Awards once they have completed their hours of Skill, Service and Physical Recreation.

The 2019 school prefects were formally inducted into their school leadership roles at the prefect investiture ceremony held on Tuesday 6th November.

The ceremony gave a welcome opportunity to meet the parents of our fine young leaders, as well as give parents a chance to applaud the achievement of their children attaining a prestigious leadership role.

We would like to congratulate our prefects and new school captains. The whole school body including students and staff participated in a voting process to elect our new prefects. Our prefect candidates were also required to participate in a selection process requiring them to address particular scenarios presented to them by a panel of staff and students.

The experience of being a school prefect will be transformative. Through service, each prefect will come to understand his or her strengths. All will grow in confidence and, we are certain, all will give back to the Kingsgrove High School community.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

The school has recently opened the newly renovated basketball courts to students.

We are very pleased with the courts renovation and upgraded facilities and look forward to many years of use.

We have imposed a few rules to maintain the courts, and for basic safety.

Basketball court rules:

No food or drink on the courts.

It is an ‘active’ area, so students cannot sit around the edges and watch games.

Bags need to be stored safely around the edges of the courts.

Tell them from me survey

This Semester, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement.

The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey is currently open and will be available until Friday 26 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary; however, your responses are very much appreciated.

To access the survey:

Overnight was spent at the Novotel in Wollongong complete with an Aussie BBQ dinner.

The next day the students were able to get up close and personal with the native wildlife at Symbio Wildlife Park.

Year 11 at bstreetsmart

bstreetsmart

Our Year 11 cohort attended the workshop as part of the schools crossroads program. 'bstreetsmart' is the inspiring initiative of the Trauma Service at Westmead Hospital. The purpose of bstreetsmart is to reduce the fatality and injury rates of young people by promoting safe behaviour as drivers, riders and passengers.

Attendance at the bstreetsmart event grows every year which means more students and teachers are experiencing and learning about the impact of dangerous/distracted driving and the consequences for those directly and indirectly involved in a crash.

Going into its 14th year, the bstreetsmart forum is Australia’s largest educational event on road safety.

Farewell message

Farewell Message

The HSC trials are over and Year 12 students are coming to the realisation that our time at Kingsgrove High School is nearly over. On behalf of Year 12, we would like to take this opportunity to farewell the school community and thank you for your continued support during our years at KHS. It is ultimately your guidance that has shaped us as individuals.

This year, as Prefects, we have been given many opportunities to contribute to school events and support worthy charity causes. These opportunities have helped us to become more confident problem solvers and communicators. We valued each other’s strengths and worked cohesively as a team to achieve goals. It was fun and we laughed. We take these skills and attributes with us into our future.

Ms Harvey has told us that leadership is not only about what we do now, but the legacy that we leave behind. In this light, we wish to congratulate the newly elected Prefect Body of 2019, and wish them all the best in continuing to be positive role models and making a difference in the school.

To our fellow Year 12 students, we would like to congratulate you on all on achieving this milestone of High School graduation, and wish you the best of luck in the HSC and future endeavours. Trust that you will achieve all you wish to achieve, and forever remember the good times we had at Kingsgrove High School.

Student prefect body 2018
