On Thursday 15 August, students from Year 10 English had the pleasure of attending a performance of the great Scottish play, Macbeth. Written by Shakespeare, the play grapples with key moral dilemmas and follows the demise of a man due to the corrupting power of unchecked ambition. Below, you will find a review written by Year 10 students.

Arriving at the play, I realised the atmosphere was inviting and left me intrigued to see the play. Small details such as the set up of the stage even before the play began was interesting, creative and left the audience with curiosity. After watching the play, I came to the realisation that the tragic nature of the play was foreshadowed right from the beginning by the crow silhouette placed on the curtains of the stage. I was also drawn into the play by the great acting – the characters had depth and it was as though they were not even acting at all. Rather than just reading from a script the actors gave their characters a place in the story and allowed the audience to connect with them. The play also added more light hearted moments; allowing the audience to have a laugh, such as when Duncan interacted directly with the audience and told a joke that made everyone laugh. My favourite part of the play was when Macbeth was debating with his emotions whether to kill Duncan or not because it depicts the reality of emotions and consciousness. All in all, this play was very enjoyable by my class and myself. The play was captivating and allowed the audience, including myself, the opportunity to feel the emotions being played out by the cast as well as having a good laugh. It was one of my favourite plays, for the reasons listed above, and I would watch it again!
