Duke of Edinburgh international award

Collage of images participating in various outdoor activities

Kingsgrove High School has had 13 students committing to The Duke of Edinburgh International Award in 2019.

Each student has set themselves goals to achieve in developing a Skill, improving in Physical Recreation and committing to a community Service over 13 hours throughout the year. The Award culminates in students completing two Adventurous Journeys.

Each student has undertaken training on the skills required to complete their journeys. Due to injury we were reduced to 12 students attending the Practice Journey where they received support from staff on navigation, orienteering, camp craft, first aid and setting up and striking camp. The Practice Journey was along the Coastal Track in The Royal National Park from Bundeena to North Era Campground and back. Whilst this was a physically and mentally challenging event all students successfully completed the hike.

Our Qualifying Journey was in Heathcote National Park where 10 students had to manage their group without teacher support or direction hiking from Heathcote Train Station to Uloola Falls Campground and up to Audley Weir and back. On the second day we hiked to Waterfall Public School and past Camp Coutts. Whilst the weather was warm on the Thursday and roasting at over 34 degrees in the shade on the Friday, all participants completed the journey after having woken at 5:30am to beat the heat.

Congratulations to all the students who completed their Qualifying Journey and look forward to seeing them receive their Bronze Awards once they have completed their hours of Skill, Service and Physical Recreation.
