Giants Netball Excursion

Group of students with Giants netballers

The Giants netball team invited a group of Year 8 girls to experience a day in the life of an elite athlete at their training facility in Olympic Park.

The 12 girls were presented information about nutrition, recovery, and weekly schedules of a female athlete at the Giants through slideshows delivered by current trainers with backgrounds from various National and state sporting teams across Australia and overseas. They were then involved in fitness testing where their agility, vertical leap and 20m sprint were measured using their high-performance gym.

Lunch was provided and matched that of a trained athlete where carbohydrate and protein-high diets were available. Spaghetti bolognese, Mediterranean chicken and plenty of colourful veggies were on full display to give a wide variety of options. This followed on the ideas brought up during the nutrition session.

The girls finished off the day with training sessions and scrimmages (friendly matches) organized and coached by some of the current Giants players, this included: Sophie Dwyer, Jamie-Lee Price, Charli Fidler and Erin O'Brien, as well as their head coach, Julie Fitzgerald. The Kingsgrove faithful managed to grab 2 wins from their 2 games with a great team effort from all.

Overall, each student enjoyed the day and took home with them a signed netball and some valuable lessons from a day in the life of a Giants player.
