Archibald Prize 2019

Students observing artwork

On Tuesday 30 July  Year 9 Visual Arts visited the Archibald Prize exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW.

Students are currently working on a Portrait Painting unit inspired the Archibald Prize.  The students were given the task to create a portrait of an influential person to show recognition for their influence and to express their identity. Many of the students chose their family members, sport icons and various celebrities as inspiration for their paintings.

This project was a reflection of the Archibald Prize held by the Art Gallery of NSW every year. The Archibald Prize is an open competition for all Australians, awarded to the best portrait, 'preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics'.

Year 9 students had a wonderful time engaging with  the artworks on display, they enjoyed looking at various subject matters, techniques and application of paint. The class favorite was Tessa Mackay “Through the looking Glass” which won the packing prize.
